A Rolling Boil in 2026

The water is boiling, the “emergency is here.” And yet if you walk out your door in most places in America, while you might feel something, it’s not like a tsunami is barreling towards you. We’re all still going to work, to class, to practice. Why and how?

The reasons are plenty. Even though the change has been fast, it’s still incremental. At the same time, we’re stunned by a series of shocks, starting with Trump’s win in 2016 and again with the Biden/Harris train wreck in 2024. In Steve Bannon’s words, the zone has been flooded with bullshit. Muzzle velocity is our everyday reality. Meanwhile, the rise of AI has people wondering what it even means to be human anymore. Given this, there are also more potent avenues for distraction than ever, be it a digital platform or paper dipped in synthetic drugs.

With midterm elections afoot, it’s important to be clear-eyed about what’s changed and what’s at stake. I won’t include the moves that, while jarring, would have been conceivable under previous administrations: attacking Venezuela, abolishing USAID, the 4 trillion in tax cuts to the rich. I want to focus on things that would have been unthinkable to most people fifteen years ago. The kind of stuff that in 2011 had you said, “in fifteen years this will be happening,” the person you’d have said it to would've thought you were insane.

Mentally time travel back to 2011. Adele’s Rolling in the Deep and Katy Perry’s Firework topped the charts. The last Harry Potter movie (Deathly Hallows Part 2) was released. The Packers won the Super Bowl, and Obama was campaigning for a second term against Mitt Romney. The first iPhone had come out four years earlier. Facebook's IPO would not happen for another year. Travel back in time to that point, and pull a random person off the street. Imagine how someone then would have reacted if you had told them in fifteen years:

-       Republicans/the right will control all three branches of government.

-       Masked and unidentifiable immigration agents will have gunned down people in the street, including citizens, with zero repercussions for the agents. Officials will lie about what everyone saw on camera, at the highest levels of government. They will disappear people, deport them to a brutal El Salvadoran prison, and detain US citizens. Racial profiling will be sanctioned by the highest court in the land.

-       The National Guard will have occupied the streets of DC and LA, with threats to expand elsewhere.

-       The president—twice impeached and a felon—will accept a gifted $400m private jet from Qatar. He will create his own digital currency which is available for purchase to foreign leaders, putatively in exchange for political access, enriching his family by the billions. He will attempt to monetize advance knowledge of his social media posts.

-       The president will deny, against all evidence, that he lost an election, and turn said denial into a litmus test for loyalty. He will have pressured officials, filed lawsuits, and organized a slew of fake electors to disrupt certification. He'll later weaponize the Justice Department to investigate its legitimacy, and pardon over 1,000 rioters who tried to the transfer of power.  

-       The Supreme Court will ban affirmative action and overturn Roe v. Wade, and the Voting Rights Act will be all but dismantled. Presidents will be given broad immunity to commit crimes by the highest court in the land.

-       The United States will be at war with Iran.

To feel the water boil for a moment is to feel a sensation, and then an emotion. Anne Applebaum has argued that authoritarian regimes depend on the public feelings of fatigue and indifference. Taken together, these facts are too much to handle. Pick one or two, and feel something else.
